Shaken Roost Duplexes

Developed as the first multifamily component within this Salida subdivision, the Shaken Roost Duplexes were conceived as an attainable housing option that would still feel personal, welcoming, and rooted in the character of a residential neighborhood.

Rather than treating economy and density as reasons to simplify the architecture into a repetitive block, the design breaks the building into two recognizable homes. Offset wall planes, varied gable forms, contrasting horizontal and vertical siding, exposed wood porch elements, and distinct street-facing entries give each residence its own identity while allowing the pair to share an efficient overall structure. A continuous covered porch reinforces the pedestrian scale of the street and creates a comfortable transition between public and private space.

Open living, dining, and kitchen spaces organize the first floor for everyday use, while the bedrooms are grouped upstairs for privacy. Shared walls, straightforward framing, compact footprints, and durable exterior materials helped control construction cost without sacrificing natural light, functionality, or curb appeal.

The result is a practical model for adding housing density in Salida without losing the qualities people associate with a neighborhood home: an individual front door, a sheltered porch, varied massing, and a recognizable sense of place.
