Creekside Mountain Retreat

Designed for a couple preparing for retirement, this residence creates a secluded mountain refuge close to skiing, hiking, and year-round recreation. The steep, irregular site presented a significant design challenge, but its mature forest, nearby creek, and natural privacy made it an exceptional setting for a long-term home.

The residence follows the contours of the hillside rather than working against them. A series of connected gabled forms breaks down the length of the house and allows it to settle naturally among the trees. The primary living spaces are organized on the main level, including the primary suite, office, guest rooms, kitchen, dining area, and great room. This arrangement supports comfortable day-to-day living while maintaining separation between the owners' private spaces and accommodations for visiting family and friends.

At the center of the home, the vaulted great room is anchored by a substantial stone fireplace and a large window wall that draws the surrounding forest into the interior. A screened porch, extensive open decks, and smaller private outdoor areas provide several ways to experience the site throughout the seasons. The garage loft adds flexible space without disrupting the main-level retirement plan.

The finished home responds directly to a challenging mountain slope while creating the sense of refuge the owners wanted: private, closely connected to the creek and forest, and well positioned for both quiet retirement living and mountain adventure.
